Welcome to the Karachi Celiac Society

Hi everyone! My name is Ameera Osman, and I moved to Pakistan from the US two years ago. I was diagnosed with Celiac when I was two-years old, so adjusting to the lack of resources for people with gluten-free diets or other dietary restrictions has been a huge adjustment.

Even though South Asians are genetically predisposed to autoimmune diseases, like Celiac, there is a dire lack of diagnosis surrounding the disease; 90% of people who are affected by Celiac disease in Pakistan aren’t even aware that they have it.

Apart from the complete lack of conversation and information surrounding Celiac and gluten-free living in Pakistan acting as a barrier, it was also incredibly isolating to not have a community of people around me experiencing the same thing. Two years later, as we are in the midst of the pandemic, I decided to found the Karachi Celiac Society as a way of connecting and distributing resources and information about Celiac on a local and national level.

Stay tuned to hear about how you can get involved with our work!
